Thank you Rachel.

Shep Smith is making the Tea Party connection, and Maddow isn’t. Strange days, indeed.

While I absolutely agree that speculating on his motives or affiliations is pointless, I think it’s worth reiterating that this is the natural ending point of a constant stream of accepted and defended violent rhetoric - violence. Treating, and openly referring to, the opposing party as “enemies” and using terms that quite obviously are meant to convey violence, murder, and the necessity to “Don’t retreat - Reload!” and “take them out” at all costs to over 300million people, will lead to violence. Whether it’s one person who has (or was expecting to soon) take an oath to protect his country from “all enemies, foreign or domestic,” or a Senate candidate saying

We have one last opportunity. And I believe 2010 is it. All right?…and if we don’t see new faces, I’m cleaning my guns and getting ready for the big show. And I’m serious about that, and I bet you are, too.

There is only one end to that constant barrage of calls to action. Whether you “expected” it to end here or not; whether you “wanted” this to happen or not; whether you “believed” this could happen or not - this is the only possible result. Every PAC and every politician - current, prospective, or foreign - who decided to use violent terms to “fire up” their constituents is partially at fault here; some considerably more than others.
But you don’t get to act surprised, because you asked for it; you might not have known it at the time, but you damn well fucking did ask.
And one crazy person, from some group somewhere, with some beliefs and values and motives answered your call.
Because he heard you loud and clear.
